Zakat Calculator with Nisab Check
Enter your savings and assets, then the silver price per gram. The calculator checks Nisab first and shows a Zakat amount only after the Nisab and lunar year conditions are confirmed.
Quick answer. Zakat is 2.5 percent of net zakatable wealth, due when that wealth is at least the Nisab (612.36 grams of silver) and has been held for one lunar year.
What Zakat is
Zakat is 2.5 percent of net zakatable wealth. It is due when wealth is at or above Nisab and has been held for one full lunar year (hawl).
Step by step
Step 1. Add cash, bank savings, gold, silver, business goods for sale and money owed to you that you expect to receive.
Step 2. Subtract debts due now. If the result is below zero, use zero.
Step 3. Nisab is 612.36 grams of silver. Multiply 612.36 by the silver price per gram you entered.
Step 4. If net wealth is below Nisab, no Zakat is due. If it is above Nisab and the lunar year is complete, Zakat equals net wealth multiplied by 0.025.
Worked example
Cash and bank savings are 1,000,000. Debts due now are 100,000. Net wealth is 900,000.
Silver price is 1,000 per gram. Nisab is 612.36 multiplied by 1,000, which is 612,360.
Net wealth of 900,000 is above Nisab. If one lunar year is complete, Zakat is 900,000 multiplied by 0.025, which is 22,500.
Common mistakes
Using the gold Nisab (87.48 grams) when the silver Nisab applies, or the reverse. This tool uses silver, which is the lower threshold and the more cautious choice for most people.
Forgetting that the lunar year counts from when the wealth reached Nisab, not from the start of the calendar year.
Counting personal items that are not held for trade. Rules on personal jewelry and some debts differ between scholars.
Limits of this tool
This tool follows the common silver Nisab method. Rulings on jewelry, property held for rent, loans to others and debts can differ between legal schools. Confirm your figures with a qualified scholar before you pay.
Who must pay Zakat
Zakat is an obligation on a Muslim who owns zakatable wealth above the Nisab threshold for a full lunar year. The rules apply to net wealth after the debts due now are subtracted.
Scholars agree on the general obligation, but they differ on details. This is why the calculator states its method and asks you to confirm lunar year timing yourself.
Assets usually included
Cash in hand, bank savings, gold and silver held as wealth, goods held for sale in a business, and money owed to you that you expect to receive are the most common zakatable items.
Gold and silver jewelry worn for personal use is treated differently by different schools. Check your own school's ruling or ask a scholar before you count it.
Assets usually excluded
Your home that you live in, your everyday furniture, your vehicle used for daily travel, and tools used for work are generally not zakatable wealth.
Rental income and property held for rent follow their own rules. The rent itself, or the value of property bought for resale, can be zakatable depending on the ruling you follow.
Lunar year and timing
The hawl is one lunar year, which is about 354 days. It starts from the date your wealth first reached Nisab and stays above it.
If your wealth falls below Nisab during the year, the count usually restarts once it rises above Nisab again. Keep a dated record of your balances to make this easier to check.
Questions
What is Nisab for silver?
The Nisab used on this page is 612.36 grams of silver. Its money value depends on the silver price you enter.
Why does the calculator not show an amount?
It needs the silver price to check Nisab, and it needs you to confirm the lunar year. The Zakat amount appears only after both conditions are met.
Is this a religious ruling?
No. It is a calculation tool. For a ruling on your situation, consult a qualified scholar.
Is Zakat due on my home?
Your home that you live in is not zakatable wealth. Rental property income and goods held for sale can be zakatable, so check the rules for each asset with a scholar.
Do I subtract debts?
Debts due now are commonly subtracted from zakatable wealth. Whether particular long-term debts are deducted is a point scholars discuss, so confirm your case.
